International science conference under way at Mandela University’s George Campus

Scores of physics scholars from around Africa and the world descended on Nelson Mandela University’s George Campus for the third biennial African Conference on Fundamental and Applied Physics (ACP2023) which took place from 25-30 September 2023.

The ACP2023 is a gathering of physics scholars, collaborators and policy influencers who, through a series of talks, panel discussions and lectures, foreground the importance of science in efforts to address some of the grand challenges of our time.

It is aimed at building capacity in physics in Africa, towards sustainable development within the continent.

Mandela University is hosting the conference jointly with the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP) and the African School of Physics (ASP).

New multi-disciplinary Honours programme in Natural Resource Management

Mandela University is offering a new BSc Honours programme focused on Sustainable natural resource management.

The full-time multi-disciplinary programme on George Campus follows the BSc degree or Advanced Diploma in Forestry, Agriculture, Conservation or Environmental Studies, as well Wood Technology, Zoology, Botany, Game Ranch Management, Geography, or an equivalent qualification.

The flagship module is the Principles of Sustainability module, focusing on the inter-relatedness of social, economic and biophysical systems .

Mandela University welding process proves to be a success at UK nuclear research centre

Mandela University’s eNtsa recently proved their WeldCore® (friction hydro pillar weld) process as a successful repair procedure at the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC) at the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom.

This is a joint research project between Electric Power Research Institute in the USA, (EPRI) NAMRC and eNtsa from the University’s Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment and Technology.

It proved to be hugely successful and celebrated by all, follow on projects in this regard has already been initiated, says Donnie Erasmus, eNtsa’s Deputy Director Engineering Projects.

CSSFF and SAMRC award full scholarships to seven Mandela University medical students

Sixty percent of Medical students in South Africa are from under-resourced families and it is very expensive to train doctors, says Nelson Mandela University’s Executive Dean of Health Sciences Professor Zukiswa Zingela.

Joining the scholarship recipients were Dr Reno Morar, Mandela University Medical School Director, Professor Zukiswa Zingela, Mandela University Executive Dean of Health Sciences, Dr Thandi Mgwebi, Mandela University’s DVC Research, Innovation and Internationalisation, Dr Richard Gordon, SAMRC representative, and Dr Sibongile Sowazi, Mandela University Director of Strategic Resource Mobilisation and Advancement. 

Prof Zingela addressed guests at the handover of joint scholarships from the Chan Soon-Shiong Family Foundation (CSSFF) and the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) to seven Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) students for the duration of their six-year medical degree studies.
