Celebrating its 50th anniversary since gaining independence from Great Britain this year, was perhaps the most ideal time for NMMU graduates to establish an Alumni Chapter in Gaborone. Onkemetse Motlhanke, an LLB graduate played a leading role calling on fellow alumni to reconnect and make the country’s anniversary year even more special. The group met several times and Onkemetse contacted the NMMU Alumni Relations Director, Paul Geswindt, to share their plans and invited him to be part of the process. The Alumni Relations Office provides guidance and support to chapters and individuals wishing to act as ambassadors of their alma mater and form alumni networks. During the visit to Botswana, the director held meetings with alumni, conducted a workshop for the chapter committee and shared best practice with the alumni relations officer at the University of Botswana. Part of the visit discussions included the important role of graduates in developing and repositioning Africa’s role in the global village as part of that make sure that there is a greater African continental connection through eg the sharing of stories and ideas.
On 22 October 2016 the Botswana NMMU Alumni Chapter was formally launched at the South African High Commission in Gaborone. First Secretary, Mr Judika Tladi, played a leading role in supporting the chapter members by providing venues for meetings as well as the launch event. He was also a special guest at the launch event and was thanked for his ongoing support. Chairman of the Chapter, Thomas Nkhoma, a BA MCC graduate informed the more than 60 alumni present that one of the main roles of the chapter is to make a positive difference in their country as NMMU alumni and to maintain their connection with their alma mater.
Most of the alumni indicated that they loved to travel and often visit South Africa and many also wish to travel the world. Included in their personal ambitions and goals are a drive to make a difference in their communities and country. The university’s footprint is global and we are proud of our alumni especially when through their expertise, experiences and influence they are able to make a positive difference in the world and form alumni networks to find strength in their unity.
