The annual alumni Sikunye Jazz event in aid of the Alumni Fund showcased the talents of music students at its 13 March 2020 event. The Alumni Fund is used by the Alumni Association to support a variety of institutional programmes including financial support to students for categories where there are not sufficient funding such as postgraduate bursaries.

The annual alumni social was not only a showcase of student talent but also an opportunity for them to practice their skill in a real event environment, where time management, organisational skills, interaction with patrons and event organisers are all part of event success. Director of Alumni Relations, Paul Geswindt said that the opportunity provided, is part of the learning experience but it also offers an opportunity for the students and groups to market themselves.

This year the entertainment was provided by the Chester Summerton Trio with members, Chester Summerton (piano), Nkosi Nkabi (bass) and Onesimo “Jazz” Ngodwane (drums) and the iNkenqe Trio with members Sinelizwi Hole (vocals), Phakamile Msizi (saxophone) and Kumkani Mtengwana (guitar). Under the guidance of Music lecturer Gareth Williams the students are able to benefit from such event opportunities that ultimately also support their academic and professional development. There are other experiential learning models in the various faculties such as internships, in-service training and vacation programmes which contribute to developing work and industry experience.

There are various ways through which alumni in their various sectors and industries can assist students and graduates to gain work experience. Students and young graduates can also benefit from the lessons learnt by those who walked the same path, that is why alumni are encouraged to connect with their alma maters. Alumni can share their expertise as advisors, mentors, coaches, presenters and facilitators. Alumni can also use their networks to support their alma mater with bursaries and job opportunities for students and graduates.

Please contact the alumni@mandela.ac.za if you have an interest in supporting your alma mater. You can also contact graduateplacement@mandela.ac.za if you are aware of job vacancies and experiential learning opportunities that can be shared with students and graduates.
