Alumni Rising Star Award recipient and Mandela BTech textile design graduate, Laduma Ngxokolo celebrates 10 years of existence of his global brand.

Adding to this, the second flagship store, which will be based at Cape Town’s Waterfront shopping mall, one of Africa’s most visited destinations will open its doors in May this year.

The label, now branded as MaXhosa Africa, has a flagship store at mall of Africa in Johannesburg, while the ready-to-wear collection is also available at selected boutiques in SA, New York, France, Australia and online. In Port Elizabeth, where Ngxokolo hails from, a physical distributor visits homes and sells the brand.

The patterns which made it famous, were inspired by Xhosa beadwork designs, symbolism and colours with the first silhouettes being cardigans, the kind worn by young Xhosa men after they come out of the initiation ritual.

A local factory in downtown Johannesburg is home to the production of the MaXhosa range, which Ngxokolo along with business associates co-owns.

Ngxokolo has swooped up many awards over the years including the 2015 Vogue Italia Scouting for Africa prize to showcase his collections at the Palazzo Morando Show in Milan, 100 Most Influential Africans of 2017, 2016 Fashion Designer of the Year Southern Africa: ABRYANZ Style and Fashion Awards among many others.
