The team, however, does not only consist of the employees of the Disability Unit, but owes its continuous success to the many helping hands that have become a part of it along the years. Volunteer scribes, readers and "buddies" have been, and continue to play an active role in ensuring the students with disabilities.
By assisting students through scribing for their tests and/or reading their test papers out to them, these volunteers pave the way for the students from their time of being first years right up until they become NMMU Alumni. While these helpers are eager and willing to assist, it must be cited that they are students themselves. This means that they are only able to help to a certain extent; during test and exam times, their main focus is directed towards their own academics.
Hence, the Disability Unity calls upon NMMU Alumni to join hands with them by volunteering some of their time to assist over these critical periods. Not only is it a way in which to help students with disabilities strive towards their academic aspirations, but it is a journey in which the volunteer enriches his/her personal growth. This task requires a warm heart, a kind spirit and a willingness to seek the exponential growth of another.
