Change the world

03/03/2016

Message from the President

Last year NMMU celebrated its 10th anniversary as a merged institution built on the solid foundations of its predecessors. The university could proudly reflect on its illustrious achievements and at the same time refresh its mission for a better tomorrow.

The university has a major role to play in societal development and will need the support of all its stakeholders including our alumni, who are spread across the globe, to ensure that it excels in the fulfilment of its role as a leading public higher education institution.

NMMU has been working tirelessly with stakeholders to address the current higher education challenges, which include the reintegration of previously outsourced support services and broadening access to quality higher education. Unlike other institutions, NMMU has been relatively peaceful, largely owing to its efforts to work with stakeholders to address the issues amicably and efficiently. As an institution that lives the values of integrity, excellence, Ubuntu, taking responsibility, respect for diversity and the environment, NMMU is able to pursue turnkey solutions with all stakeholders in a credible manner.

Contrary to expectations South Africans have witnessed increasing inequality and now more than ever, education is the most powerful development tool. Unfortunately, access to quality higher education is limited to a small percentage of our population and even a smaller percentage of the poor. Transformation and change in society must be inclusive and rational, therefore violent acts and destruction of property should be condemned. Building an inclusive and just society on the foundation of an unjust and divided past, requires the wisdom and support of all of us who can make a meaningful and constructive contribution.

As a country we have some complex issues to deal with and higher education institutions have a major role to play in addressing many of those issues. We, as alumni, must heed the call to leadership. Our country and our university need us. We must demonstrate our tangible support for our alma mater.

We value your support and we invite you to tell us how you can help to make a positive contribution. Contact us at alumni@nmmu.ac.za.
