More than twenty direct alumni engagement events took place during 2016 with events in major South African centres as well as an event in Gaborone where the launch of the Botswana Alumni Chapter took place to coincide with the country’s 50th independence anniversary. Our pre-alumni, Student Alumni Society, also organised twelve events and exceeded their Madiba T-shirt Bursary Campaign goal of selling 2500 T-shirts (see separate story). The Alumni Association held a successful AGM and a new executive committee was elected. The University Shop achieved its sales target and the project income target was achieved which allowed the Association to donate R150 000 to the Trailblazing Bursary Campaign and to donate R110 000 to directly assist students in financial need. A further R300 000 was used to support various university and student projects.  Other highlights included the visit to NMMU by Yale alumni and the interaction our alumni interaction with an institution recognised for having been the pioneer in university alumni relations. Our Past Pupil Programme, developed to help with the development of schools through their alumni involvement, also led to the establishment of an AlumniNetwork for schools and a Metro Bursary Fund. We also acknowledge the various internal and external partners who have contributed to building relations with a growing alumni base. Finally, we would like to thank our alumni who are making a difference in society wherever they may find themselves. Thank you to all our donors and individuals who support our projects and events and those who continue to make us proud. Stay connected!
