Graduates ploughing back their aquaponics skills in rural communities

Two Nelson Mandela University graduates intend using their new innovative agriculture skills in the rural Eastern Cape communities where they grew up, to assist with food security in a resourcescarce region. Sinazo Tomose, from Cacadu, and Unathi Mgcebele, from East London, were awarded their diplomas in agricultural management after doing extensive research and gaining valuable work experience in the field of aquaponics.
They were able to complete their studies thanks to the internships they secured with nonprofit organisation INMED SA, a company focused on developing programmes for food security, child and community health and social development through agricultural education.

More Freediving accolades for Chemistry lecturer
Mandela University Chemistry lecturer, Dr Gletwyn Rubidge, once again took top honours at the SA Pool Freediving Nationals held in Gqeberha last month.
The competition, which took place at Newton Park swimming pool, included a number of different events and Gletwyn was placed first overall.
Setting a new SA national record in the Dynamic Monofin (DYN M), his 200m dive was done in the pool in the horizontal plain. He swam four, 50m lengths underwater on one breath, kicking like a dolphin with a monofin. Setting the new record took two minutes and 40 seconds. His previous record was 188m set about four years ago.

Alumna graces the cover of Accounting SA
Buhle Hanise, PG Certificate in Accounting alumna, Chief Financial Officer at Chinese automotive company BAIC South Africa and President African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA) has been featured in the latest edition of Accounting South African magazine.
When she was only in Grade 7, Buhle Hanise Nomabunga CA(SA), BAIC CFO, decided to become a chartered accountant after she was inspired by Sindiswa Zilwa, the then second black, South African female CA(SA) and others. Today as president of the African Women Chartered Accountants (AWCA), she is 100% dedicated to helping other women achieve their dreams too.

Mandela Uni PhD in Physiology student accepted for international programme
PhD in Physiology student Itumeleng Zosela has been accepted to join the Next Generation Scientist Programme by Novartis Pharma and the University of Basel, Switzerland.
The eight weeks virtual programme during July and August is an intensive training programme for talented and motivated research scientists from low- and middle-income countries.
The research of Itumeleng, who obtained her master’s in Nanoscience (cum laude) from Nelson Mandela University, focuses on the treatment of colon cancer using green-synthesised gold nanoparticles. Her supervisors are Dr Steven Mufamadi, who holds the Research Chair DSI-Mandela Nanomedicine Platform and Biochemistry and Microbology’s Prof Saartjie Roux.

E-Technologist Simon Venter selected for Nando’s Creative Exchange
E-Technologist in the Learning & Teaching Collab department at the University and Media and Communication alumnus Simon Venter, has been selected as one of four artists to take part in this year's Nando's Creative Exchange.
The culmination of event is a group show at the AVA (Association for Visual Arts) Gallery in Cape Town in November this year.
The Nando’s Creative Exchange (NCX) is the food chain’s flagship artist development programme which was started in 2011. The programme aims to recognise emerging, Southern African fine artists who demonstrate exceptional ability.

It’s been said that the next world war may well be fought over water. Countries are already pulling political pranks to secure inflow from upstream across their borders, while entrepreneurs scramble for first place in the race to offer solutions to a thirsty, embattled Eastern CapEe.
The province’s ongoing drought has created multiple business opportunities, as well as innovation in related fields - new products and schemes for smart and efficient delivery of the most basic necessity, water, to communities.
The solutions are varied, and some won’t work long-term; yet those who can are paying top dollar for supply in the short term, regardless of the much-touted 70-million litres of water flowing in from the Nooitgedacht Scheme Phase 3.
