Comfort Munzhelele, HCert (Criminal Justice) & Dip (Law Enforcement) alumnus who graduated cum laude with a weighted average of 80% gives insight into how she achieved this academic excellence. In this Q&A she reflects on her journey at Nelson Mandela University.
1. What inspired you to choose your qualification, and what drew you to this field of study?
With much interest in true crime and how investigators solve cases and the enjoyment of learning about crime patters, understanding why crimes happen, and witnessing how the legal system works. Comfort shares that it is this level of curiosity that led her to study Law Enforcement.
As I got further into my studies, I realised it was more than just an interest, it became something I genuinely wanted to build a career in. Learning about policing, criminal justice, and the role law enforcement plays in protecting communities made me even more passionate about the field. It also inspired me to keep furthering my studies because I believe there’s always more to learn.
2. Were you involved in any extracurricular activities, student organisations, leadership roles, volunteering, or community initiatives during your time at the University? If so, how did these experiences shape you?
Without any formal student organisations or volunteering, Munzhelele helped one of her close classmates understand course content they covered, by going through modules together, discuss difficult topics, and explain concepts in a comprehensive manner, for all to understand.
Helping someone else taught me that leadership isn’t always about having a title. Sometimes it’s simply about being willing to support the people around you. It also improved my communication skills and reinforced my own understanding of the work.
3. As a Faculty Top Student, how did you balance your academic responsibilities with your personal life, work, or other commitments?
Being originally from Pretoria and moving to the Eastern Cape for university meant being far away from her family and everything she was used to, it was not easy balancing studies and being far away from home, she mentions.
I reminded myself why I had started this journey and stayed focused on my goals. I kept a study routine, managed my time well, and tried not to leave things until the last minute. I also made time to call my family because hearing their voices always motivated me to keep going. Looking back, being away from home taught me independence, resilience, and perseverance. Those lessons helped me grow just as much as my studies did.
4. Now that you’ve completed your qualification, what are your career aspirations, and how do you hope to make an impact in your profession or community?
Graduating wasn’t the end of the journey for Comfort. After completing both her Higher Certificate in Criminal Justice and Diploma in Law Enforcement, both with cum laude, she took the decision to pursue an Advanced Diploma in Policing, to keep growing and learning.
My goal is to build a career in law enforcement and public service where I can make a real difference. I want to be part of creating safer communities, upholding the law with integrity, and treating people fairly. I’m excited about continuing to learn and gaining experience so that I can make a positive impact wherever my career takes me.
5. What does being recognised as your Faculty’s Top Student mean to you?
Being one of her Faculty’s Top Student means a lot to Comfort. It reminds me that all the long nights, sacrifices, and hard work were worth it. Coming this far to study wasn’t always easy, but this achievement showed me that staying focused and believing in yourself really does pay off.
Like many graduates, I hoped that achieving something like this would immediately open more doors. Although my journey after graduation hasn’t happened exactly the way I imagined, this recognition has given me confidence to keep pushing forward. It’s a reminder that success doesn’t always happen overnight, and that perseverance is just as important as achievement.
6. What advice or words of encouragement would you like to share with current and future Nelson Mandela University students?
Believe in yourself, even on the days when things feel difficult. There will be moments when you feel overwhelmed or question yourself, but don’t give up. Stay consistent, ask for help when you need it, and trust that every bit of effort will be worth it in the end.
To students studying towards a Diploma in Law Enforcement, I encourage you to consider furthering your studies after graduating. Continuing your education gives you a deeper understanding of the field, helps you grow personally and professionally, and can open up even more opportunities. Choosing to continue my studies has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.
Lastly, don’t compare your journey to anyone else’s. Everyone’s path is different, and success doesn’t always happen at the same time for everyone. Keep working hard, stay humble, and celebrate every milestone along the way because each one brings you closer to where you want to be.
