A DRIVE FOR INNOVATION

BAVARIA-BASED AUTOMOTIVE INNOVATOR, MARK ALEXANDER, IS A TESTAMENT TO THE TRANSFORMATIVE POWER OF EDUCATION, RESILIENCE, AND SEIZING GLOBAL OPPORTUNITIES.

A Foundation Built on Resilience

Mark Alexander's formative years were marked by both challenge and opportunity. Growing up in Schauderville, a community plagued by violence and gang activity in the 1990s, Alexander attended a Catholic primary school, which provided a strong foundation. Despite the difficult environment, the school’s committed teachers went above and beyond to offer stability and structure. The Catholic values instilled during these years shaped much of Alexander's moral compass, providing a sense of purpose and perseverance that would remain central to his character.

As Alexander progressed to High School, he encountered educators who would profoundly impact his intellectual and personal growth. His English teachers played pivotal roles in his development, helping him overcome initial challenges with the language and instilling in him a love for communication and debate. Motivating him to join the Debating Team and the Herald Quiz Team—these experiences allowed Alexander to hone his public speaking and problem-solving abilities, skills that would later become invaluable in his professional life.

These foundations were solidified at Nelson Mandela University, where Alexander’s academic journey took an unexpected turn. Initially inclined to pursue a career in law, he found that his true calling lay in the business world with his evolving interest in economics and business administration that set him on his current trajectory.

His Corporate law lecturer, Mrs. Coetzee, left a lasting impression, providing him with practical skills that would prove beneficial throughout his career. “Looking back, the education at NMU equips students exceptionally well for the corporate world. I would even recommend that non-law students consider taking some law courses, as understanding and analyzing contracts is essential for any corporate career.”

AIESEC and Leadership Development

“AIESEC played a pivotal role in my development. It allowed me to build leadership skills, enhance problem-solving, and master practical skills like moderating workshops and leading meetings. These experiences equipped me with a strong foundation for my corporate career.” As president of AIESEC, Mark says that this experience laid the foundation for his corporate leadership style, which emphasizes continuous learning, and collaboration. At university, I was heavily involved in student development, bringing me daily contact with the Student Development and Governance Department, especially Santhoshini Peterson (née Ramadu). Her constant guidance and motivation were invaluable during my tenure as President of AIESEC. Without her support, I wouldn’t have achieved as much as I did in that role.

“AIESEC also instilled in me the importance of giving back, which I’ve carried forward in my work—whether through mentoring young professionals or advocating for socially responsible projects. The network and experiences I gained were invaluable stepping stones in my career.”

Career Evolution

“I think graduates often have unrealistic expectations of rapid advancement. Career growth takes time, effort, and patience. During my internship at Standard Bank, I gained a deeper understanding of the inner workings of business operations and financial management. It taught me the value of learning from the ground up, being detail-oriented, and taking initiative. I also learned that mentorship is a privilege, not a guarantee—it’s up to you to earn the trust and investment of those willing to guide you.”

Alexander’s career took an unanticipated turn when he joined VWSA’s graduate program. Although his studies in law and economics were foundational, his passion for global opportunities led him to procurement. “During my time at university, I was highly active in student organizations and connected with HR representatives from VWSA. When I was accepted into their graduate program, I was asked which department I’d like to join, and I said, “One that allows me to travel a lot.” That’s how I found myself in procurement.” This curiosity and desire for new experiences would eventually be the cornerstone of his professional journey.

“Working at Volkswagen South Africa was a pivotal step—it’s a global company, which naturally opened doors for me to move to its headquarters in Germany. However, it wasn’t just my qualifications; it required hard work, perseverance, and the support of a great boss in South Africa who believed in my potential. Having a strong foundation in law and economics certainly helped, as did my ability to deliver results consistently.”

The transition from his education to the professional world, however, wasn’t without its challenges. “The biggest challenge during this transition was learning German—a tough language to master. However, after over a decade in Germany, I’ve grown comfortable with it and consider it one of my most outstanding personal achievements.”

“Later, my MBA at ESMT, one of Europe’s top business schools, was a natural progression.” This allowed Mark to sharpen his leadership skills and deepen his understanding of procurement on a global scale. “The program exposed me to fresh ideas and concepts, greatly enriching my current role of Procurement Lead: Innovation at AUDI AG. Learning doesn’t stop once you graduate; it’s a continuous journey. Whether in your career or personal life, never stop growing.”

Leadership and Innovation Through Collaboration

As a Procurement manager, Alexander’s leadership style is defined by his ability to bring diverse teams together—from development to finance to strategy—to collaborate on finding and implementing innovative solutions. His greatest strength lies in his ability to align these teams with a shared vision, ensuring that all ideas are integrated into a cohesive plan that aligns with the high expectations of premium customers.

In terms of leadership, Mark takes a uniquely hands-off approach. He believes that motivation is an intrinsic force that each individual must cultivate. “My role as a leader is to create an environment where people feel supported and empowered to achieve their goals. This involves providing clear direction, celebrating successes, learning from mistakes, and being available when challenges arise.”

Work-Life Balance

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Alexander is deeply committed to maintaining a balanced life. “I’m fortunate to live in Bavaria, where the mountains and lakes are just a short trip away. I love hiking, and more recently, I’ve taken up skiing. Weekdays are dedicated to work, but weekends are all about immersing myself in nature and staying active. It’s the perfect way to recharge and maintain balance.”

Flexibility, for Alexander, is a trait that allows him to adapt to the ever-changing demands of both personal and professional life. He notes, “It’s natural to become more risk-averse with age, but the ability to stay flexible and adjust when necessary is crucial.”

Perseverance in the Face of Adversity

Over the years, Alexander has faced numerous challenges, particularly when working abroad. One of the most significant hurdles was realizing the gap in problem-solving skills often left unaddressed by traditional education. Fortunately, he had the guidance of mentors at Volkswagen and Audi, whose advice helped him navigate these challenges and advance his career. As Alexander reflects, the role of mentorship cannot be overstated—“Identify mentors within your organization who can support and guide you. Their insights can be transformative.”

Throughout his career, Alexander has consistently delivered results. His tenure at Volkswagen South Africa laid the groundwork for his international career, eventually leading him to Audi AG. “We’re not just building cars; we’re crafting mobility experiences.” Alexander’s journey, marked by perseverance, hard work, and a commitment to innovation, continues to shape the future of procurement and supply chain management.

Looking Forward: Innovation and Strategic Alliances

As for the future, Alexander envisions procurement continuing its embrace of digitalization. He predicts that A.I. will play an increasing role in automating routine tasks, but he believes the human element—building partnerships and managing stakeholder relationships—will remain essential. Future professionals, he advises, should focus on strengthening their skills in strategic alliances and partnership management to stay relevant in the changing landscape of global business.

Mark Alexander’s career is a shining example of how dedication, adaptability, and a commitment to personal growth can lead to remarkable success. “Whether in your career, personal life, or hobbies, there’s always something new to learn and discover. Be curious, patient, and open to feedback, and remember that success often comes from consistent, incremental progress.”
