Oxford University accolade for Mandela’s Prof Pumla Gqola

Professor Pumla Dineo Gqola, Mandela University Professor of Literary and Cultural Studies and the SARChI Chair in African Feminist Imagination, has been awarded a prestigious international award.

The Board of Advisors of the James Currey Society in co-operation with the African Studies Centre at the University of Oxford, has approved Prof Gqola as the James Currey Lifetime Achievement Awardee for 2023.

The award appreciates and recognises important work in literary criticism and African literature

“I am honoured that my scholarship has attracted this kind of recognition, not just at home but across the world,” said Prof Gqola.

Mandela Uni students come out tops in DHL GradStar Awards 2022

BCom Financial Planning student from Nelson Mandela University Yonela Peter has been selected by the DHL GradStar Awards 2022 as one of the Top Ten most employable full-time students in the country.

Another four Mandela University students have made it to the Top 100 in the country. They are Alfred Adjei (LLB), Monalisa Mapapu (Advanced Dip Business Studies) Alulutho Cita (BTech Human Resources Management) and Hlengiwe Nzama BCom Financial Planning.

Mandela University’s Occupational Health achieve outstanding audit result

The Occupational Health Services team has done Nelson Mandela University proud receiving a 92 percent score for a professional occupational health-related audit of their operations, systems and service undertaken during the current academic year.

In striving to meet the institutional value of excellence, Occupational Health Services volunteered to be audited by their professional body, the South African Society of Occupational Health Nursing Practitioners (SASOHN) in June 2022.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of occupational health services within the institution. Therefore, the decision was made to be audited in order to prepare ourselves and asses our compliance and readiness for future health disasters management.

International Award for Mandela University’s CCT

Mandela University’s Centre for Community Technologies (CCT) has won the @OutSystems Innovation Award for Social Impact with their C-Vive application.

This award recognises the team’s hard work and commitment to business innovation with high-performance low-code.

The CCT, CANSA, NTT Data and OutSystems all partnered together to create the C-Vive app to help educate the broad population of South Africa on breaking the stigma around cancer symptoms and diagnoses.

Mandela University’s Dr Savania Nagiah inaugurated as member of SAYAS

Medical School senior lecturer Dr Savania Nagiah, was recently inaugurated as one of 10 of the country’s leading emerging scientists to become members of the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS).

SAYAS members are young scientists under the age of 40, who have PhDs and are deemed excellent in their fields of expertise.

Dr Nagiah’s research focus is the learning and teaching of molecular biology in medical education, and she lectures Medical Biochemistry and Cell Biology in first- and second year MBChB basic science modules at the University’s Medical School on Missionvale Campus.
