First prize for Occupational Health Team at National Conference
Reasons to be Proud - #R2BP - Nelson Mandela University’s Occupational Health Team won first prize for the institution’s COVID-19 poster at the national conference of the South African Society of Occupational Health Nursing (SASOHN). The team’s poster, titled Global Pandemic: An Occupational Hazard – A Mandela (Rising) Response, covered their journey from the start of the COVID-19 pandemic to implementation of the COVID-19 vaccination at the institution.

Mandela University Medical School a lifeline for healthcare and socioeconomic development
Developing healthcare professionals with a heart for the community and its healthcare needs, and an opportunity for urban renewal in Gqeberha’s Missionvale area and surrounds are some of the major spin-offs of the country's newest medical school, based at Nelson Mandela University.
The Mandela University Medical School, launched on 30 November 2021 at its home on the institution’s Missionvale Campus, has been lauded as a beacon of hope for the region, province and country as the need for medical professional mounts.
Speaking at the launch event, which was also livestreamed on the University’s YouTube channel, Vice-Chancellor Prof Sibongile Muthwa said with social justice at its core, this medical school was set to change the healthcare landscape of South Africa, the Eastern Cape and its immediate communities.

Mandela University Chancellor Dr Fraser-Moleketi awarded honorary doctorate by NWU
Nelson Mandela University Chancellor, Dr Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, was lauded with an honorary doctorate by the North West University (NWU) recently.
Recognising her exceptional contribution to the South African political landscape and society at large, the NWU conferred Dr Fraser-Moleketi during a ceremony on Friday, 19 November 2021.
“I thank the university for bestowing on me the highest honour in academia. I’m incredibly humbled to receive this honour from the North West University. Thank you,” said Dr Fraser-Moleketi.
Dr Fraser-Moleketi said when she got the call to enquire if she would consider accepting the honour, she thought it was not something one could instantaneously agree to without considering the weight and the responsibility it carries.

Mandela Uni Steelpan Ensemble wins several awards at international festival
The newly established Nelson Mandela University Steelpan Ensemble, conducted by Siyamthanda Xotyeni, recently won several awards at the 10th world-renowned International Marimba & Steelpan Festival, with 1615 participants this year.
The ensemble forming part of the University’s Music and Performing Arts Department won ‘The Trinidad and Tobago High Commission Award for the Best South African Open Steelpan Performance’ in the Special Award category. They were placed first in the ‘’In The Mix’’ category and second in both the ‘Proudly South African’ and ‘Battle of the Bands’ categories.

Nelson Mandela University celebrates music legends at Isisusa Fest ‘21
Jazz took centre stage at Mandela University recently with the virtual hosting of the 13th Isisusa Fest ’21 in which the artistry of three fallen music legends were celebrated.
Mandela University Vice-Chancellor Professor Sibongile Muthwa introduced the work of late Lawrence Matshiza, Dr Sibongile Khumalo and Oliver Mtukudzi to a global audience of music lovers before top local student, staff and community musicians perform.
“We wish to pay homage to these musicians by celebrating their work. The tribute should signal hope for future creatives and artists to keep striving for excellence and to continue to collaborate,” says Prof Muthwa.

Mandela Uni design student in second place in national competition and into global competition
Third-year Nelson Mandela University BA Media, Communication and Culture design student Jamie Penrith, won second place in her category in the national Student Gold Pack Packaging Awards competition. She will now be entered into the WorldStar Student packaging awards.
Jamie’s submission into the category of 'Packaging promotes purchase and use’ was a Moon Cup Hourglass packaging.
It is noted that this competition does not expect students in one particular discipline to be packaging, design and marketing experts, but rather students should display an insight into the challenges of packaging and the interaction of the multiple disciplines required in this exciting industry.
