20/06/2018

Fashion Design alumnus Siphesihle Soldati will be showcasing her new design collection at the Mercedes Benz African Fashion Week being held at the World Trade Centre in Accra, Ghana during July.

The fashion show is produced by Global Ovations in collaboration with the French Fashion Federation which are also the organisers of Paris fashion Week.

“Fashion Week is a huge thing to any designer. Apart from the fact that I will unveil my talent and skill but also bring me, retailers and consumers to a common platform. It’s the most effective trade event platform for us as designers and the people that are within the fashion industry, she says”.

Soldati who draws her inspiration from her late mother, Nomkhutha Florida Soldati, who hailed from Xhwili, a small rural place outside of Umtata. “I am most impressed by how she lived her life as a parent, career woman, traditional healer and a source of inspiration to her people from the birthplace,” says Soladi.

She then tries to create a visual vernacular, using her life as a source of reference, attempting to create and broadcast a culturally evolving African aesthetic with the use if her personal style creating visual commentary highlighting the beauty of all African women.

“It is my belief that personal style can be used as a tool to decode centuries -worth of African hidden truths and nuances, the way in which one wears clothes and accessories could be a form of expressionism, whether expressing confidence, assertiveness or even restraint,” Soldati says.

Through exploring all these various avenues of the visual vernacular, the crux of her work is to prove that clothing, textiles and personal style can be used as a shield to protect and preserve the magical prowess of one’s culture and identity.

But this determined women also has national and international fashion idols in the likes of Thuli Sindi and Victoria Beckham.
