The NMMU Alumni East London Chapter together with the Alumni relations office recently held an Alumni Cocktail evening at the East London Golf Club. The event held on 28 March was attended by more than 50 alumni and friends.

AWARD-winning Afrikaans novelist and alumnus Eben Venter received an Alumni Achiever Award when he pre-sented NMMU’s first public lecture for 2012.His public lecture was attended by more than 120 alumni, friends and stu-dents from schools in Port Elizabeth where Venter shared some extracts from his published books.

The Department of Education (PE District) and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Alumni Relations Directorate hosted a workshop for high school educators to learn how to set up Alumni (Past Pupil) Associations. The workshop took place at the NMMU Missionvale Campus Conference Centre where than 60 educators attended.

The Alumni PE Chapter recently launched a book club. Guest speaker, Prof Helize Van Vuuren reviewed the well known book by J.M Coetzee, "Summertime".

The NMMU Alumni Cape Town social was held recently at the Townhouse Hotel and Conference Centre.

The PE Alumni Social was held during February at the Madibaz Cafe on NMMU's South Campus. More than 150 alumni and friends attended the cocktail and social function.

The annual Alumni Executive Breakfast was held on 17 November at the North Campus Conference Centre.

The 2011 Achiever Awards was held in Port Elizabeth on 23 November.

A rugby Reunion was held at South Campus Sports Centre earlier this year. The event was attended by more than 100 alumni and friends.

The Legacy Directorate together with the Alumni Relations Office hosted a Reunion for all ex hockey players of the former UPE and PE Technikon at the South Campus Sports Centre recently. The well attended function was one of many successful reunion events held this year.

The PE Alumni Chapter recently held a Diversity Talk at the NMMU North Campus Conference Centre. The talk was given by Adj Professor Enver Motala and Professor Yagita Rao and spoke on the topic 'The complexities of enhancing democratic non-racialism in developing societies'.

The NMMU Alumni Cape Town Chapter together with the Alumni Relations Office hosted a social earlier this year at the Hildebrand Restaurant where more than 50 alumni and friends attended.

The NMMU Alumni Johannesburg Chapter and the NMMU Alumni Relations Office hosted a social this year at the Country Club Johannesburg. More than 150 alumni and friends attended this networking event.

The NMMU Alumni East London Chapter and NMMU Alumni Relations Office hosted a social event earlier this year at the East London Golf Club. Close to 100 alumni and friends attended this function.

More than 200 students graduated at the George Campus in April 2011, bringing the total number of NMMU alumni to 98 576

Over 5000 students graduated from NMMU this year bringing the total number of graduates to 98 576 and increase in 8% from last year. This includes 313 master’s degrees and 64 doctorates, up from 252 and 39 respectively in 2010. This year NMMU awarded honorary doctorates to Sir David Attenborough, Mark Shuttle-worth, Tembeka Nkamba-van Wyk, Prof Suresh Kana, Judge Lex Mpati and the late Prof Wally Morrow.

More than 300 alumni and friends attended the NMMU Port Elizabeth Alumni Chapter social this year. The event was held at Madibaz at the NMMU South Campus earlier this year. Alumni and their partners gathered to socialise, network and witness the launch of both the Alumni DVD and brochure.

THE new year started on an interesting note, with an Accounting reunion for graduates from 1965-1990 in January 2011 held at NMMU’s VIP Lounge on South Campus. The well - attended function, hosted by the Legacy Directorate together with the Alumni Relations Office, had past students reminiscing about their good old varsity days. The aim of these reunions is to meet graduates, create opportunities for friends to get together and for graduates to reconnect with their alma mater.

THE 10th London Alumni social took place at the Investec offices in the English capital in July 2010. The aim of the social was to introduce the new Trust Executive Director Thembela Sofisa and familiarize alumni with the new roles of Prof Kotie Grove (Director: Legacies) and Paul Geswindt (Director: Alumni Relations).

GEORGE took centre stage in May when it hosted a series of events highlighting its importance as an NMMU campus. An alumni social, the opening of a new student recreational centre and the staging of Open Day for prospective NMMU learners all took place within 72 hours in the beautiful Garden Route city. The Alumni Association hosted the Southern Cape Alumni Social at the Herolds Bay Hotel as part of NMMU’s aim of raising awareness on the recent happenings and events to come.
