Creative Alumni Fundraising Events

16/03/2017

The two most important functions of the Alumni Relations Office (ARO) can be defined as alumni relationship building and alumni resource mobilisation in support of the university’s goals. Organising fun and innovative networking and relationship building events that can contribute to resource mobilisation is an exciting challenge. Last year the ARO held a very successful wine tasting event presented by alumnus and wine expert Olga Hafner from Meridian Wines. This year alumnus and marketing manager at Mastertons, Gillian Pillay talked about coffee.

BREWED… The first NMMU Alumni lifestyle fundraising event for the year recently took place at Rendezvous CafĂ©, on South Campus. NMMU Alumni Relations together with Masterton's Coffee and Tea Specialists, the oldest brewer in South Africa, entertained the guests with their creative coffee art and the simple tradition of a perfectly brewed cup of coffee. More than forty coffee lovers attended the event. Present at the event were Director: Alumni Relations Paul Geswindt (from left), Mastertons Marketing Manager and alumnus Gillian Pillay, Mastertons Barista Trainer Zeus Gqabu along with alumni and friends Jade and Fiona Greve.

Coffee as a social drink can be part of catching up occasions, networking and business deals, information sharing sessions or even alone moments to read a book or watching the world go by. It can be the wake up or stay awake drink and often individuals consume several cups a day. The Mastertons presentation included some interesting facts about coffee and the variety of coffee based drinks, how to brew coffee and the different types of equipment that can be used. Barista trainer Zeus Gqabu also showed his coffee art skills that makes the coffee experience one involving all the senses.

Enjoy your cappuccino but consider saving the value of a cup and contributing it to a worthy cause such as the Alumni Bursary Fund. Every contribution helps. So far this year the Association assisted 31 students with financial support valued at R153 848.37 with fee, book and subsistence support and much more will be needed for the rest of the year. If you would like to contribute to the Fund please email alumni@nmmu.ac.za or phone 041-504 3935. Donations can also be deposited directly in the NMMU Alumni account at Standard Bank account 080-292-321. As reference use your cell number to contact you. Every small monthly donation eg R20 makes a difference.  We are grateful to all sponsors and donors who support the Alumni Bursary Fund.
