The inaugural Varsity MTB Challenge takes place between 1 and 2 October 2016 and will have a unique university flavour. The race is open to the general public, who will be able to race for their university of choice.

Our gallery showcases the activities, engagements and community projects the Alumni Office have been involved in since our last e-newsletter.

Our Vice-Chancellor, Prof Derrick Swartz, has launched his 2016 fundraising campaign #Trailblazing.

At the launch, guests participated in a symbolic 430m walk around the NMMU stadium on South Campus symbolising the 43km, four-day Inca Trail in Peru which the VC and 22 others will be walking with the aim of raising R4m.  This will enable 160 academically deserving students who have completed 75% of their studies, but who had to drop out because of financial restraints, to each receive R25 000.

Alumni and Friends can contribute to the upliftment of society by supporting their alma mater’s bursary and academic programmes. Contributions can include an affordable annual or monthly donation, a major gift or bequest (testamentary) agreement. We have online donations and debit order facilities. If alumni are aware of bursary or employment opportunities for students and graduates, they are welcome to inform us about such opportunities including those linked to their networks. The university needs support to ensure that academically deserving and financially needy students have the required funding to complete their studies and find employment to contribute to the development of our communities and country.

This year, the Disability Unit boasts a total of some 430 students across all campuses and faculties to whom it caters. Students with various physical, visual, hearing and learning disabilities are accommodated and eased through their degrees with the help of the Disability Unit team headed by Professor Iona Wannenburg.
